Staying in an overwater bungalow has been on my bucket list for a long time. I dreamed of lounging around on a deck while being over the water, listening to the waves, with a cold drink in my hand.
Until recently, I thought the only option to have this once in a lifetime experience involved flying an ungodly number of hours to Bora Bora. Don’t get me wrong- I would’ve done it, but it is a little inconvenient.
Enter internet research. Frank told me to research places I would like to go on vacation this summer. I immediately googled over water bungalows, and low and behold, I found Palafitos overwater bungalows. IN MEXICO. I sent Frank the info and everything else was history. I jumped and giggled like a school girl when we booked it!
The bungalows are located in the El Dorado Maroma Resort and Spa in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It is about a 30min ride from the airport in Cancun, Mexico. The Palafitos is a seperate and exclusive area of the resort. The bungalows have a restaurant and spa that is exclusively for the guests staying in the bungalow.
The photo above speaks for itself. The accommodations were to DIE for! The bungalows have glass bottom floors where you can see directly into the water below you. There is an infinity pool on the deck, an outdoor shower to use if you would like to be one with nature, and an AMAZING bathroom! The water in our shower was citrus scented! I mean c’mon y’all! It was the most refreshing shower I’ve EVER taken.

Each bungalow comes with their own “sun deck” that is accessible from a staircase off of your outside living area. There is a ladder off of the deck that leads directly into the water. The deck is somewhat small, and after having a couple shots of tequila, I had to be careful not to fall off! But the risk was worth it! It was amazing to sit so close to the water and just climb down the ladder to take a quick dip or wander through the water.
When we were booking the bungalow it stated on the website that a butler was included. Frank and I looked at each other and I said, “A butler. Really?” It sounded excessive. It sounded extra. Let me say this y’all, I have NEVER experienced such amazing service in my entire life.
We had one butler from 7a-3p and then another from 3p-11p. When I say we wanted for nothing, it is not a stretch. One night we didn’t feel like leaving the bungalow and asked if we could have a meal other than room service. Our butler went and talked with the chef of the private Palafitos restaurant, and sometime later, a full steak dinner arrived at our doorstep. They even delivered drinks to us while we were sitting on our sun deck. I could go on and on about the excellent service, but it truly MADE the trip.
This was the view from our breakfast table one morning. I could’ve sat there all day. It was so peaceful and serene, and the food was amazing! We did not have a bad meal the entire stay. The wine lists were to die for. The cuisine options were versatile. Steak, seafood, Italian, Japanese, Mexican- so many choices! The all inclusive package includes food and drinks (alcoholic). The only items that we had to pay for were bottles of wine with our dinners. We were also informed that we could pay for bottles of liquor for the bungalow.
My favorite place to go during the day? Right there. Switching between lying in the cabana or sun bathing on the lounge chairs. There is nothing better than a slight breeze with the warm sun beating down on you. The sound of the waves calming you. Oh if I close my eyes, I can feel it again!
When you book one of the bungalows, this beach is used strictly for the guests staying in the bungalows. There is a beach butler provided as well as a bartender. Again, we wanted for NOTHING. We had a beach picnic every single day. The privacy when using the bungalows is amazing. There were maybe 5 more couples on the beach with us, but it felt like we had it all to ourselves. The set up allowed for peace and quiet.
At night, we spent a lot of time outside. There was a two person chair, a table and chair, and of course the pool. Walking in the bungalow after dinner was always dreamy. Housekeeping would coincide with our butler so they could provide turndown service while we were at dinner.
When we were checking in, we were asked to pick a scent that we would like used in the room (earth, water, citrus, etc.) We weren’t really sure how the smell would be incorporated, but oh were we surprised. We would open the door to the bungalow and this amazing smell just emanated from the room. I still don’t know how they did it, but it was magical. It was the cherry on top.
The resort offers many activities during the day (jet skiing, hangliding, kayaking, etc.) but we did not book any of the activities. We wanted to relax and live on the beach. The resort also had several events occurring at night, but we did not partake in any of these either. They had a tequila tasting one night, a DJ party on the beach, etc. I’m sure all of it would’ve been great, but, again, we wanted rest and relaxation.
We did, however, partake in the spa services that were offered. They had recently upgraded the spa within the main resort, so we had the option to choose which spa/services we wanted. We did hydration therapy in the new spa and then received our facials and massages at the spa in the Palafitos section. The walking distance between the two was very short, so it was no inconvenience at all.
Oh, Palafitos how I miss you! It truly exceeded my expectations, and to have this paradise so close to home?!?! Even better. No jet lag, no time zone change. We wanted a vacation where we could completely relax and rewind. Palafitos in the El Dorado Moroma was exactly what we wanted. If you are even having a slight thought about staying in an overwater bungalow, you HAVE to do it. I hope this review has helped you! It is an experience you will never forget! I know I won’t!!!!!
